NACA Computer at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory
NASA ID: GRC-1951-C-27174
A female computer at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory with a slide rule and Friden adding machine to make computations. The computer staff was introduced during World War II to relieve short-handed research engineers of some of the tedious computational work. The Computing Section was staffed by “computers,” young female employees, who often worked overnight when most of the tests were run. The computers obtained test data from the manometers and other instruments, made the initial computations, and plotted the data graphically. Researchers then analyzed the data and summarized the findings in a report or made modifications and ran the test again. There were over 400 female employees at the laboratory in 1944, including 100 computers. The use of computers was originally planned only for the duration of the war. The system was so successful that it was extended into the 1960s. The computers and analysts were located in the Altitude Wind Tunnel Shop and Office Building office wing during the 1940s and transferred to the new 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel in 1948.

If you’re a business owner in 2025, there’s a good chance you’ve Googled “How much should a website cost?” and walked away more confused than when you started. Some sites promise $500 builds. Others quote $15,000+. So… what’s the truth?
Let’s clear things up. No fluff. Just real numbers, real expectations, and how much a professional website on Long Island should realistically cost.
At Logic Web Media, we’ve been building websites for Long Island businesses since 2005. We’ve worked with startups, growing businesses, and established brands. Here’s what you need to know.
The Short Answer: It Depends on What You Need
That’s not a cop-out—it’s the reality. A one-page brochure site for a local handyman is a very different beast than a full e-commerce platform for a brand selling hundreds of products.
But we know you came here for ballpark numbers. So here’s a straightforward breakdown of what a professionally built website will typically cost in 2025, with Long Island businesses in mind.
Basic Website ($2,500 – $5,000)
Best for: Local service businesses who need a basic online presence.
eg- Plumbers, Contractors, Restaurants, Medical Practices, etc.
Includes:
- Custom design (no templates)
- 4–6 core pages (Home, About, Services, Contact, etc.)
- Mobile responsiveness
- Contact form
- Basic on-page SEO
- Setup on your hosting/domain
What you’re not getting:
- Custom functionality
- E-commerce
- Advanced animations or interactive features
📌 Think of this as your digital business card. Clean, professional, and built to build trust.
Mid-Level Website ($5,000 – $10,000)
Best for: Growing businesses, those needing stronger SEO, or companies expanding online offerings.
Includes everything in the basic package, plus:
- Custom features or integrations (booking systems, live chat, client portals)
- Copywriting or content guidance
- Blog setup
- Custom iconography/graphics
- Strategic UX planning
- Analytics tracking
📌 This is for Long Island businesses that want to turn their website into a lead machine—not just a placeholder.
E-Commerce Website ($8,000 – $20,000+)
Best for: Product-based businesses, which need Magento, Shopify, or WooCommerce builds.
Includes:
- Product database setup
- Cart & checkout customization
- Shipping/tax setup
- Payment gateway integrations
- Customer account system
- Email setup (invoicing, abandoned cart, order follow-ups)
- Mobile optimization (a must for shopping)
📌 Your site needs to sell. That takes more than just uploading products—it takes experience, planning, and the right Long Island web development team.
Ongoing Costs to Factor In
A website isn’t a one-time purchase. Here’s what else to expect:
Service | Estimated Cost | Notes |
---|---|---|
Hosting | $200–$400/year | Higher for faster, secure hosting; Renewed Yearly |
Domain Name | Approx $22/year | Renewed yearly |
Maintenance & Updates | $149/hour | We can customize maintenance plans |
Ongoing SEO / Marketing | $500–$5,000/month | Optional, but valuable for growth |
At Logic Web Media, we offer monthly maintenance and SEO packages for Long Island clients who want to keep their site running smoothly and ranking strong.
Why $500 Websites End Up Costing More
We’ve seen it too often: businesses choose a low-cost freelancer or template builder, only to redo the site six months later because:
- It doesn’t convert visitors
- It’s not mobile-friendly
- It’s slow, clunky, or insecure
- They can’t update anything without breaking it
📌 A cheap site is expensive when it doesn’t work.
Bottom Line: Invest Based on Your Goals
If you’re just starting out and need a basic, well-built site, $3,000–$5,000 is a realistic range. If your website is a key part of your sales process—or your entire store—be ready to invest more.
Think of your website as a salesperson that works 24/7. If you wouldn’t pay a salesperson $500 and expect results, you shouldn’t expect that from your website either.
